With Moves Like MacGyver examines the creative lengths to which makers will go in order to complete a piece that they did not originally have the tools necessary to do so.
The exhibition features the work of 12 jewelers and metalsmiths. Each artist has two pieces in the exhibition: one jewelry object or small sculptural piece, displayed alongside a specialized tool that was created by the maker for the sole purpose of completing that object, with the premise that neither item would exist without the other. Participating artists are: Autumn Brown, Harlan Butt, Jim Dunn, Chris Hentz, Nicole Jacquard, Kerry McGeein, Tom Muir, Mary Raivel, Justin Tejeda, Billie Theide, Demitra Thomloudis, and Kathryn Wardill.
About the jurors:
Tim Lazure is an Associate Professor in the Metals Design program at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. He received his BFA at Rochester Institute of Technology and his MFA at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. Tim shows his jewelry, silversmithing and furniture in both national and international exhibitions. He has pieces in the permanent collections of the Mint Museum of Craft and Design in Charlotte, NC and in the Gallery of Art and Design in Raleigh, NC.
Randy Long is Professor in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. Randy received her BA degree and MA degree from San Diego State University and an MFA degree from California State University at Long Beach. In addition to having exhibited her work nationally and internationally in over two hundred exhibitions, her work is also represented in many private and public collections, a few of which include: The Art Institute of Chicago; The Museum of Art and Design in New York; The Indiana University Art Museum; the Indianapolis Museum of Art; The Jewish Museum in New York; and the Yale University Art Gallery. She has presented lectures and given workshops on jewelry and hollowware at some of the leading crafts schools in the U.S., as well as abroad.
Both Tim and Randy have a reputation for putting exquisitely crafted objects out into the world, as well as a history of doing whatever it takes to get the job done.
About the organizers:
Sara Brown is currently an Adjunct Professor at Pitt Community College. In 2009, she earned her BFA in 3-dimensional design from Bowling Green State University and 2012, her MFA in metalsmithing and jewelry design from Indiana University.
Marissa Saneholtz is currently an Instructor at Bowling Green State University. In 2008, she earned her BFA in 3-dimensional design from Bowling Green State University and 2011, her MFA in metals and jewelry design from East Carolina University.
